Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection from Aspyr brings us two iconic games in a single package. Star Wars Battlefront launched back in 2004 – yes, it’s really been 20 years! – giving us a chance to dive into massive battles between factions in the Star Wars series. It was released on the PlayStation 2, and had you taking on either offline or online conflicts with a ton of on-screen characters – at least for the era. And yes, this game most certainly had online multiplayer back in the day, thanks to the online network add-on for original PlayStation 2 consoles and the Ethernet port on the PlayStation 2 Slim models.
The sequel, aptly titled Star Wars Battlefront II, was released the following year in 2005, and it featured new maps, new vehicles, and new characters, as a sequel should. It expands on what its prequel did while also having a more narrative-driven approach to things. And you also get to go into space! More of the same and some new stuff added here and there is not a bad way to approach the development of a sequel, and that whole space fight thing was definitely something that many fans requested back in the day.
Once you boot up this collection, you’ll be greeted by a minimalist main menu from which you can select to play Star Wars Battlefront, the sequel Star Wars Battlefront II, or register your game with Aspyr. Once you select your game and campaign to play, you’ll get the classic Star Wars crawl that will let you know what has happened, what is going on, and what it is that you need to take care of ASAP. The games use full-motion video cutscenes that show the action out-of-engine, using movie clips. Take, for example, the first mission in the first campaign for Star Wars Battlefront, which is The Battle of Naboo. You’ll get to see a short clip from the movie when the droids are being deployed into action right before you are tasked with destroying the mobile shield generator by eliminating all Fambaas.
You will also need to wipe out the entire Gungan Grand Army to be able to proceed. Pick your spawn point, and get ready to jump into action as a Battle Droid, Droid Snipper, Droid Pilot, or Droid Demolitions unit. For the next mission, you’ll also be able to pick the mighty Drodeika! And once you control a Super Battle Droid… Oh, and don’t worry, you’ll also get to play on the other side. The sequel will present the story of a former clone stormtrooper, so you’ll be enjoying more of a Story Mode along with the multiplayer side. Speaking of which, the multiplayer supports up to 64 players, so those on PlayStation 4 can play with those on PS5 and vice versa.
You’ll move with the left analog stick as you look around with the right one. You can play from a first-person perspective or switch to a third-person camera. To switch between the two, press in on the left analog stick. The X button is for jumping, and you can attack with the R2 button for primary fire and with the L2 button for secondary fire. The R1 and L1 buttons are used to switch weapons for the primary or secondary options. To reload, press the Square button. You can check the map by pressing the Touchpad on the DualSense as needed.
Since you’ll control some vehicles on this journey, you’ll be able to pilot them with the left analog stick as you land and take off with the X button. You will attack with the R2 and L2 buttons for primary and secondary fire, but you won’t change between weapons since those are fixed and depend on the vehicle you’re piloting. You can also play from a first-person or third-person perspective when piloting a vehicle, changing by pressing in on the left analog stick.
Trophy-wise, this collection features a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy for you to work on. And since it’s a Cross-Buy title, if you own a PlayStation 5 console, you’ll be able to download the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost, and each version will have a separate trophy list. The list has 30 Bronze trophies, 12 Silver trophies, and a pair of Gold trophies. A handful of the trophies are tied to Star Wars Battlefront, with the rest requiring you to play its sequel. For the first one, you’ll have to complete both of its campaigns, as well as throw a Jedi hero off a map and take down an AT-AT Walker with a Snowspeeder.
For the sequel, there’s plenty to do. Some of the objectives you’ll need to complete include getting a bunch of medals for marksman, regulator, technician, guardian, frenzy, demolition, gunslinger, regulator, endurance, and war hero. This will allow you to boost your standing and eventually reach Elite, Veteran, and Legendary status for each of them. You’ll also need to rank up and reach the Sergeant and General ranks. It’s been 20 years since the first game’s release, so it’s definitely a good time to revisit this pair – or to experience them for the first time. The collection had some issues at launch that have been patched by now, so be sure to give this one a go! Along with taking on battles as one of the grunts, you’ll also have the option of playing as the Jedi heroes and the Sith villains – Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Mace Windu, Darth Maul, General Griveus, or Darth Vader, to name some examples.
